Text lesson

Welcome!

Hello! I’d like to give you a brief outline of the course, as well as an overview of what each week will look like.

  • Most of the lessons are short videos, explaining a high-level overview of a subject.
  • Mixed in will be some lessons where you will do a task, including sometimes posting something to Discord.
  • There are also Quizzes, to check how much you’re paying attention 😉
  • Finally, there are Assignments, where you are tasked to take what has been taught, think, and answer some questions about it, within a specified wordcount. Note that the wordcount is part of the assignment. Being able to expand on a subject (for some), or make your thoughts more concise (for others) is a communication skill that can be developed.

Each Week we will be reading 2 chapters from Kevin Schut’s book: Of Games and God: A Christian Exploration of Video Games (Amazon link). It should be available as Kindle or Audio-book in addition to paperback. Please make sure you have access to this book, as we will have questions and discussion around it.

Each Week we will have a “Game of the week” which we will spend some time studying, and answer questions about. One of the staff may even stream themselves playing it a bit, so we can have some live discussion (You’re welcome to stream as well). You will get the most out of the experience if you’re able to play them yourself, but if needed as a last-resort, watching a letsplay could work. The games are:

  1. MYST
  2. Legion TD2 (You will be given a Steam Key for this)
  3. FNAF
  4. Halo series
  5. Hollow Knight

At the end of each week, we will have a live meeting for around 1.5hrs, where we will unpack some of the weeks’ content, as well as hear from a guest speaker and have a Q&A time with them. I understand that with time-zones this meeting may be challenging, but please make it a priority. We will need to confirm exact meeting times once all the students are signed up. These meetings will be recorded. The speakers will be:

  1. Jaclyn S. Parrish
  2. Brent Batas (Creator of Legion TD)
  3. Brad Hickey
  4. Alex “Magnus” Lehmann (One of the creative leads at Riot Games)
  5. Neil Sauvageau

Feel free to make yourself heard on Discord, and any feedback on the course is appreciated. This is the first of it’s kind in YWAM, and we expect to learn as much as you do!

Finally, please do not use AI to help write your answers to things (unless otherwise specified in an assignment). We care more about your thought process, and your own personal perspective, than about trying to find the “right” answer, or the most eloquent one.
